[BACK]

Alexander Arutunian was an Armenian composer/conductor who studied in Moscow and returned to his homeland to work. He wrote his Concerto in 1949 for a Soviet trumpeter, who later immigrated to the US, introducing the work to US audiences and entering it into the standard repertoire for trumpeters.

Many people hear the Armenian (Eastern European) folk sound in the piece, as well as the influence of jazz. (Or could it be that jazz is influenced by Eastern European, gypsy music?)
